In early March 2007, the Laramie Police Department began receipt of 26 new marked patrol vehicles. The vehicles are 2007 Chevrolet Impalas, especially factory equipped and upgraded for police patrol use. They have a larger capacity engine and an extra heavy duty suspension system. Each new vehicle is equipped with a digital video system that will record police activity and in-car mobile computers capable of sending and receiving information to and from the emergency communications center, entering and receiving data into and from the Local, State and National Computer Systems, sending e-mails and instant messages to other police units, accessing maps, monitoring all police activity and much more.

Each vehicle will be assigned to an individual patrol officer with an option for that officer to “take the vehicle home” when off duty and on days off. Use of the vehicle on days and time off is limited. The advantages of the “Officer Assigned Take Home Program” include: enhanced police presence throughout the community and vehicles that are better maintained and last much longer than pooled vehicles.
